Background
-Indonesia is the 4th largest country in the world
-10 million live in the capital and one quarter live in slums
-Densely populated slum with 4000 plus people
-4km north west of the capital
-Population density - 35000/km^2
-Densely populated because of lack of education so people have alot of kids
Education
-Poorly equipped schools
-Very few children complete a formal education
-Small fees in high school
-Children have to work therefore cant attend school
-Indonesia 4th largest education system but it was ranked education report of 50 nations Indonesia ranked last.
Housing condition
-Narrow alleyways and tall building meaning natural light is constricted
-Made from timber and brick and makeshift materials
-No toilets (unsanitary)
-Lots of people in one house
-High fire risk crowded and use of kerosene as fuel and improvised
-electrical wiring
- 32 houses in Jembatan Besi were destroyed and 3 people were injured when a fire broke out in late March 2018
Income and employment
-Average income 4US dollars a day but its very irregular
-Due to lots of self employment, selling food, making food from salvaged materials
-Most informal industry (making clothes) but this has very little protection meaning working condition are very poor
-The richest 10 percent control 30 percent of household income in Jakarta
-compared to areas like Kelapa Gadingcan earn well above the national average, often exceeding $50,000 annually
Health
-Very little sanitation due to lack of infrastructure
-No clean running water
-Use groundwater supplies
-Leads to epidemics of water borne –diseases such as typhoid
-Kerosene used for cooking which causes lots of air pollution = respiratory issues
-Nutrition is mainly rice - malnourished
Natural characteristics
jambatan Besi - Jakarta slums built along the Ciliwung river which is prone to flooding. Shaped negative place identity in a way that its unwanted land, people forced to live there because of poverty.
The future
Jakarta housing and administrative buildings agency has identified 392 areas that need improving however people are just being relocated to the slums so its not actually improving
