why were the catholics plotting against James I?
Catesby was a Catholic and part of a series of families who decided to be fined for not going to church and harbouring sheltered priests which was highly illegal and inspired by foreign catholic revival who wanted radical change and prosecution of Catholics had started back up and peace with England and Spain in 1604 meant that English Catholics wouldn’t get support from Spain.

via letters a relaxation catholic of threats from the law.
why did James reintroduce fines?
Because of the pressure from parliament, 1604 Parliament passed an act calling for ‘due execution of the statutes’ against ‘any manner of recusants’
How were the Catholics treated in England by 1603?
treated badly and seen as potential traitors bc of the plots against Elizabeth I so recusancy fines were increased and 146 catholics were executed for sheltering priests but then James lowered fines.
Why was James initially prepared to be tolerant towards Catholics?
He didn’t mind Catholics who were quiet and didn’t cause any trouble because they didn’t make threats against him.

a petition signed by 1000 Clergyman asking for moderate puritan reforms.
What was the Hampton Court Conference?
it was a conference where Bishops and Puritans could debate the issues raised by the Millenary petition and look at different church issues.
What was the outcome of the HCC?
- King James Bible 1611
- majorly a fail bc their requests were viewed as trivial
- couldn’t get rid of bishops because James didn’t want to be like Scotland ‘no bishop, no King’

James was suspicious of Puritans but he has some sympathy but they are irritating.

what was the gunpowder plot?
-involved digging a tunnel underneath House of Parliament with an intention to set off an explosion to kill the King and MPs.
-led by Robert Catesby and main plotters came from gentry families who had suffered most from the recusancy fines.
-plot was found out when Lord Monteagle received a letter of warning.
effects of the Gunpowder plot?
-James was upset by the plot
-recusancy fines were increased and Catholics were forbidden to live in or near London or hold public office.
-and had to take a new oath of allegiance which denied the Popes authority to depose Kings.

-the failure for supporting the Protestant cause on the continent.
