how did Ireland differ to Scotland?
-it was not an independent kingdom and instead was more similar to a colony.

-Dublin administration was headed by a Lord lieutenant, the Irish Parliament had to implement laws made in England
what religion did the majority of the Irish hold?
-roman Catholic
what was a Lord lieutenant?
-monarchs representitive and head
what was the Religion in Ireland?
-Protestant Church of Ireland was imposed on the country and the majority were Roman Catholic.
how did James deal with religion in Ireland?
-a lot more complicated than Scotland as there were 3 faiths: Catholic majority, Church of Ireland which was Calvinist than England and small group of Presbyterians.
-James knew it would a difficult task to create a uniform religion or change religion so he did not.
what did James want for his Kingdom?

-Absentee monarch
how did James deal with religion in Scotland?
-wanted to bring the Scottish church into conformity with England.
-knew that there could not be complete harmony but was determined to introduce Bishops.
-did this in 1618.
-although the underlying Presbyterian structure remained James forced a number of liturgical reforms, the Articles of Perth and these were deeply unpopular, especially the one that prescribed kneeling to receive communion as it was seen as Catholic.
-James realised he went too far and articles were not strictly enforced and the new drafted Bible in 1619 was not imposed.
