What is the placebo effect?
Response to biologically inert treatment

What are common symptoms at the end of life?
Dementia/Delirium Dyspena Swelling Anxiety Nausea/ Vomiting Xerostomia (dry mouth)
Can expectations have an effect on outcome?
YES!
“This is going to hurt a bit” makes it hurt more

What is the difference between dementia and delirium?
Dementia = chronic loss of memory and other cognitive function
Delirium = acute confusion, agitation, altered mental status
Does oxygen help dyspnea?
No consistent benefit!!!!
Will help oxygen saturation, but not necessarily shortness of breath ( so still administer)
Should you use essential oils to relieve shortness of breath?
Avoid, due to risk of exacerbation
Differences between dependent edema, ascites, anasarca, and lymphedema?
dependent edema= pools in your feet
Ascites = swelling belly, liver
Anasarca= full body, renal
Lymphedema = tumor related
What is the difference between primary and secondary anxiety?
Primary anxiety = related to depression, generalized anxiety or phobias
Secondary anxiety = end of life fears, adrenal tumors, acute air hunger, chronic dyspnea
What is xerostomia?
