Israel
A crossroads, linking Anatolia, Egypt, Arabia, and Mesopotamia.
Hebrew Bible
The Old Testament that include the prophecy of Jesus Christ as God’s appointed Messiah.
Yahweh
The Israelite god who gave the land of Israel to Abraham and his descendants.
First Temple
The link between religious and secular authority in that the Israelites had a central shrine. The religious center for all Israelites and Jews. Built by David’s son Solomon.
Monotheism
The belief in Yahweh as the one and only god.
Diaspora
Greek word meaning “dispersion” or “scattering”.
Jesus
a young Jewish carpenter from the Galilee region in northern Israel.
Paul
A Jew from the Greek city of Tarsus who focused on the spiritual hunger among many non-jews and eventually set up a string of Christian communities in the eastern Mediterranean.
Aqueduct
A long elevated or underground conduit that carried water from a source to an urban center using only the force of gravity.
Mecca
A late-blooming caravan city occupies a barren mountain valley halfway between Yemen and Syria and somewhat inland from the Red Sea coast.
Muhammad
The founder of the Islamic religion. Prophet of the Islamic God.
Muslim
One who makes “submission” to the will of the Islamic god.
Islam
An Abrahamic monotheistic religion centered on the Quran and the teachings of Muhammad.
Medina
The place where Muhammad migrated to after Mecca.
Umma
A community defined by acceptance of Islam and of Muhammad as the “Messenger of God”.
Quran
The book of words from the Islamic god. People recorded them from Muhammad.
Caliphate
An Islamic form of government in which political and religious. leadership is united, and the head of state (the Caliph) is a successor to the Prophet Muhammad.
Shi’ites
Those who believed Ali was the Prophet’s heir.
Sunnis
Those Muslims who supported the first three caliphs.
Ulama
Social group of religious scholars.
