Bondsmen
Unfree people in society (slaves, serfs, retainers).
Retainers
People who are products but it’s only use
Serfs
Unfree peasants who worked on the lands of aristocrats.
Sangha households
Bondsmen came in groups who belonged to the monastery and were protected by the monastery but had to hand in a specific amount of crops every year.
Buddha households
True slaves were given to the monastery by others.
Monastic Serfs
Bondsmen who came in as individuals to work for the monks, while they are not monks themselves, they have to know the rules of a monk.
Eunuch
Formed when a young boy had surgery on his private parts to prohibit children.
Manumission
Process of becoming no longer a slave
Marriage Manumission
The process of the slave becoming free through marriage.
Pawn
A type of trade in which the borrower can get back the item if he/she returns the money.
Redemption
When the seller pays the person to get the slave back to the family.
Xi Min
a male slave who did dirty work and was treated horribly.
Mai Jai
Rare slavery, in which all elders (above 60) sign a flag that makes slaves legitimate air of the family.
Mu Jai
Female slaves who do domestic labor and free through marriage.
Southern Slavery
A type of slavery exclusive to southern China where slaves are being traded through contracts and it consists of four characteristics. (Contract, gender-specific, matchmakers, Xi min and Mu jai)
