ionic bonding, ionic compunds Flashcards
what are ions
charged particles
what can ions either be
single atoms or groups of atoms
what are anions and how do they form
they are negative ions and they form when atoms gain electrons
what are cations and how do they form
they are postative ions and form when atoms loose electrons
how do you work out the charge on an ion
the number of electrons lost or gained
if elements are in the same group whats the same
the number of electrons in the outer shell
how does an ionic bond happen
when a metal and a non metel react the metal looses electrons (negative) to form a posative ion (cation) and the non metal gains these electrons to form a negatice ion (anion). These oppositely charged ions are attracted to each other by strong electrostatic attractions.
what is the overall charge of any ionic compound
0
how do you work out the formulae of ionic compounds
write out both the ions after you have worked out the charges then you get the negative charges to balence the posative ones
what structure do ionic compounds have
giant lattice
why do ionic compounds have high melting points
the electrostatic attraction between oppositely ions is very strong so alot of energy is needed to break these attractions
are ionic compounds conductors
not when they are solid but if you melt them or dissolve them in water they can conduct electricity
