Ionic Bonding Flashcards
How do you name a metal and non-metal compound?
Metal goes first
Non-metal ends in -ide
How do you name a metal, non-metal and oxygen compound?
Metal goes first
Non metal ends in -ate
What can you put in front of a non-metal compound to show how many of the atom there are?
A number prefix
What number prefixes are there?
mono = 1
di = 2
tri = 3
tetra = 4
What is the formula for dinitrogen tetraoxide?

What are the 7 diatomic elements?
Hydrogen
Oxygen
Bromine
Nitrogen
Chlorine
Iodine
Fluorine
What do atoms take place in chemical reactions to achieve?
A full outer shell of electrons
Why does an atom want to achieve a full outer shell of eletrons?
To become stable (like a noble gas)
When an atoms gains electrons, does the charge increase or decrease?
Decreases as there will be more electrons than protons and electrons have a negative charge
When an atoms loses electrons, does the charge increase or decrease?
Increases as there will be more protons than electrons and protons have a positive charge
How will elements in groups 1, 2 and 3 achieve a full outer shell?
By losing electrons (a positive charge)
How will elements in group 5, 6 and 7 achieve a full outer shell?
By gaining electrons (a negative charge)
How do metals achieve a full outer shell?
Losing electrons
What is the name for a positively charged ion?
A Cation (cat-ion)
How do you draw an ion?
Draw the ion with all of the shells that it has full. If it is groups 1, 2 or 3 it will lose one shell. Draw all the shells to be as full as they can due to electron configuration. Draw a square bracket around the whole ion and write the charge in the top right corner (on the outside)
What is the name for a negatively charged ion?
An Anion
