Invertebrate Animals (Phylums) Flashcards
What are the phylum’s
And an example of each.
PORIFERA- Sponges
CNIDARIA/COLENTRATES- jelly fish
PLATYHELMINTHES- Tapeworm
NEMATODA- Hookworm
ANNELIDA- earthworm/ leach
MOLLUSCA- octopuses
ARTHROPODA- insects/ spiders
ECHINODERM- Starfish
CHORDATA- humans
What is the porifera phylum?
The porifera phylum includes sponges. They are called PORifera because of the pores they have which pumps water into them to trap food. Sponges are a simple multicellular animal that are mostly sessile, and asymmetrical. They also have no organs or tissues. Sponges can reproduce asexually by buds breaking off, or by releasing sperm and fertilizing an egg.
What is the Phylum Cnidaria?
Jelly fish are an example of the Cnidaria phylum. Most organisms in this phylum are marine. They have tissues specialized to preform specific functions. Cnidarians are radial symmetry. They are almost all carnivorous and use nematocysts (stinging structures) on there tentacles to sting. Cnidarians are sexual and asexual. They have two body types: pollupse, and Medusa.
What is the phylum Platyhelminthes
Flatworms are an example of this phylum. They have organs and organ structure. They have a simple brain and nervous system that coordinated there muscles. Each tapeworm in this phyla contain both male and female reproductive organs. Some are parasitic some aren’t.
What is the Nematoda phylum.
Hookworms are Nematoda. Nematoda have a tubular digestive system with a mouth and anus.they get there cylindrical shape from a fluid filled cavity called a pseudocoel. Most are parasitic. Covered with a cuticle. They reproduce sexually.
What is the Annelida phylum.
The annelida phylum contain leaches, and earthworms. They are known as segmented worms and are the first invertebrates to show segmentation. Segmentation allows for organ development. They also have cephalization which is all of the organs being located in the head.
What is the phylum mollusca.
MOLLUSCA are normally bilaterally symmetrical. With muscular feet for movement. Most have a head and eyes and a open circulatory system. They include:
Bivalves: clams, mussels.
Gastropods: snail
Cephalopods: octopus
What is the Arthropoda phylum.
Arthropods are bilaterally symmetrical, segmented and covered by a tough exoskeleton. Arthropods have open circulatory systems. Thsi phylum includes:
Insects
Spiders/ arachnids
Lobsters/ crustaceans
What is the echinoderms phylum.
Starfish are in this phylum. Echinoderms have a endoskeleton. Adults are radially symmetrical, while larves are bilateral. They lack a head. They use tube feet for there water vascular system. They can regenerate asexually of a arm.
