INTRODUCTION CLASS Flashcards
HAEMOPOIESIS
formation of blood cells
when does haemopoiesis start
in utero at gestation
main organs in hematopoietic cell maturation
Bone marrow
spleen
thymus
lymph nodes
precursor for development of platelets obtained from bone marrow
megakaryocytes
Ways to sample bone marrow aspirate
2 ways.
bone marrow aspirate- using a special needle to draw fluid
trephine biopsy -cut biopsy of the tissue of bone marrow, sectioned and studied
Most commonly used site for sampling in adults
posterior superior iliac spine.
Advantages of using posterior superior iliac spine
safe
yields increased bone marrow
disadvantage of using posterior superior iliac spine
People with fat deposited in their back cannot have a lot of bone marrow aspirate removed.
such people use anterior superior iliac spine .
sites for sampling of bone marrow
posterior superior iliac spine
anterior superior iliac spine
the sternum
the tibia
Why is the sternum less preferred for bone marrow sampling?
Inferior to the sternum are major vessels like the aorta
in a condition like brittle bones, boring through the sternum will easily lead to damage of surrounding organs
Main site of bone marrow aspiration in children
tibia
site hardly ever used for bone marrow aspiration
vertebral bodies
Growth factor for erythropoiesis
erythropoietin
Growth factor for granulocyte and monocyte
granulocyte monocyte stimulating factors
