Q

What are the two main categories of cells in the brain ?

A

nerve cells, or neurons, which are the information-processing and signaling elements, and glial cells, which play a variety of supporting roles.

Q

List and descirbe the main components of neurons

A

cell body (soma) –> supports the metabolic and synthetic needs of the rest of the neuron.

dendrites –> receive information from other neurons via synaptic contacts (or synapses)

axon –> conducts information away from the cell body.

Q

Descibe the two main divisions Nervous System Matter and what is their main components

A

Grey Matter and White Matter.

Grey Matter refers to areas where there is a preponderance of cell bodies and dendrites.

Specific areas of gray matter are often called nuclei, particularly if the contained cell bodies are functionally related to one another. An area where gray matter forms a layered surface that covers some part of the CNS is referred to as a cortex

White matter refers to areas where there is a preponderance of axons , and it refers too to the cell bodies of axions in PNS.

Q

What are the main types of Glia in CNS ?

A

— astrocytes: maintain iconic balance, transfer metablities , respond to neural injury by forming scar tissue
— ependymal cells : create the lining of ventricles and choroid plexus.
— microglia : the immune cells of the brain.
