Intro to Micro Flashcards
What is microbiology?
Biology of things that are too small to see with naked eye
How small can you see with your eye?
0.1 mm
easier to see when moving
Who is Anthony Leeuwenhoek?
the father of microbiology who was from the Netherlands
What are the different microbes?
viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites
What type of fungi is single-celled?
yeast
yeast=single-celled
mold= multi-celled
dimorphic= yeast and mold forms
What are the primary classifications for viruses?
DNA and RNA viruses
What are the primary classifications for bacteria?
gram + and gram -
What are the primary classifications for fungi?
yeast, mold, dimorphic
What are the primary classifications for parasites?
protozoa, worms
Are protozoa or worms bigger?
worms
What are the secondary classifications for protozoa?
ameba, flagellates, sporozoa
T/F: most common bacteria live in the body that cause pathogens
False. Most microbes aren’t pathogenic but they do live in the body
What is the hygiene hypothesis?
as childhood infections went down, autoimmune diseases went up
sum: must have enough good microbes so the immune system can recognize them and not respond
What is the normal microbiota?
it is different for everyone based on people’s diet and where they live
What is so good about parallel sequencing?
DNA sequences million templates at a time
(using PCR amplification)
