Intro To Embryology Flashcards
What are the stages of the development of the blastocyst?
- Blastomere (2-cell)
- Blastomere (4-cell)
- Blastomere (8-cell)
- Morula
- Blastocyst
What is the most common site of ectopic implantation?
Ampulla
What site of ectopic pregnancies can result in placenta previa?
Lower uterus/cervix
What are the layer of the bilaminar disc, and when do they form?
- Epiblast and Hypoblast
- week 2
What event establishes the axis of the body?
Formation of the primitive streak
What are the layers of the trilaminar disc?
- Ectoderm
- Mesoderm
- Endoderm
Which of the germ layers face the yolk sac?
Endoderm
What are the three major disruptions that form during gastrulation?
- Saccrococcegeal teratomas: Remnants of the primitive streak which migrate caudally and form a tumor
- Caudal dysgenesis: Insufficient Mesoderm results in lack of formation of the lower limbs
- Situs Inversus: Defects in the formation of the primitive streak leads to defects in establishment of the longitudinal (left-right) axis.
Which weeks of development are at the highest risk for the formation of teratomas?
Weeks 3-8
Describe the lateral folding of the trilaminar disc.
The embryo folds laterally changing from a flat disc into a cylinder with the ectoderm on the outside,
endoderm forming an inner tube (primitive gut) and mesoderm trapped in between.
What structures are formed from an extra fold of ectoderm above the notochord?
- Neural Tube
- Neural Crest
What are the fates of NC Cells?
Migrate to form:
- Dorsal root ganglia
- Peripheral nervous system neurons
- Melanocytes
- Langerhans cell (endocrine Cells)
- Conotruncal septum of the heart
- Diverse structures in the head and neck
Which body system is the first to function in the developing embryo?
Cardiovascular system
Which weeks signify the start of blood flow and electrical activity in the developing heart of the embryo?
Circulating blood -> Week 3
Electrical activity -> week 4
What structures are derived from somites?
- Skeletal muscle
- Vertebrae and ribs
- Dermis/ct of the skin
