Cardiovascular Flashcards
What are the layers of the vasculature?
Tunica Intima: Endothelium, Purkinje Fibers, CT
Tunica Media: Myocardium
Tunica Adventita/Externa: Mesothelium, Loose CT, Blood vessels, and nerves
What are major histological characteristics of Purkinje fibers?
- Intercalated discs
- Glycogen filling
- Paler staining
What composes the membranous myocardium?
Dense Irregular CT
What are the tissues in the epicardium?
- Mesothelium
- Loose CT
- nerves and vessels
- Fat *Cushioning
What is the visceral layer of the pericardium?
Mesothelium
What is the role of Mesothelium?
Secretes Serous Fluid
What is between the visceral and parietal layers of the pericardium?
Pericardial cavity
What is characteristic of lumen, TM, and TA of Veins?
- Large diameter lumen
- Smaller Media than Adventita
- Larger Adventita w/ LONGITUDINAL Smooth muscle
What is characteristic of Lumen, TM, and TA of Arteries?
- Diameter similar to vessel thickness
- Larger TM than Adventita w/ circulatory SM
- Smaller adventitia than media
What are the elastic arteries?
Aorta, Pulmonary Arteries, and their largest branches
What is the role of the Vasa Vasorum?
To provide metabolites to cells in the tunics of the Aorta
What are the long cytoplasmic processes which partly surround the endothelial layers of venues and arterioles
Pericytes
What are the types of capillaries and their major characteristics?
Continuous: Tight, well developed occluding junctions; Most common; Numerous pinocytic vesicles
Fenestrated: Numerous small openings w/ think diaphragm of proteoglycans; Continuous basement layer; Rapid interchange Ryan’s like kidneys and intestines
Discontinuous (Sinusoids): Large perforations w/ out diaphragms; Spaces between and through cells; Incomplete or absent basement layer; Bone marrow
Which type of vasculature Contain precapilary sphincters?
Metarterioles
