Intro Flashcards
What are the 2 major divisions of the nervous system?
Central nervous system and Peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS comprised of?
Brain
Spinal cord
What are the 2 subsections of PNS?
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
Describe the somatic NS
Receives sensory info from around the body
Contains a motor part which is voluntary (motor neurons that innervate muscles)
Describe the autonomic NS
Under involuntary control
Works through effectors in smooth muscle, gland and cardiac muscle
Where is anterior axis?
Brain side
Where is posterior axis?
Back side
Where is the dorsal axis?
The back
Where is the ventral axis?
The belly
Where is the medial axis?
Close to the midline
Where is the lateral axis?
Close to the outer body
Where is the superior axis?
Above
Where is the inferior axis?
Below
Where does the sagittal plane cut across?
Across the midline
Where does the parasagittal plane cut?
Parallel to the midline
Where does the coronal plane cut?
Cuts into anterior and posterior
Where does the horizontal plane cut?
Separates superior and inferior
Where does the longitudinal plane cut?
Along the length
Where does the transverse plane cut?
Across the spinal cord (horizontal)
What is in the forebrain?
Cerebral hemispheres
Thalamus and hypothalamus
What is in the hindbrain?
Pons
Cerebellum
Medulla
What does the midbrain control?
Basic motor control
Processes pain
What is the ventricular system?
A space within the brain full of cerebrospinal fluid that provides protection
Maintains ion levels
Removes waste products
Where is the ventricular system?
Lateral ventricles meet at 3rd ventricle and a tube goes into 4th ventricle
What are the 4 subdivisions of the spinal cord? Starting at the top
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Sacral
What are the 2 enlargements in the spinal cord?
Cervical enlargement
Lumbosacral enlargement
What is the role of cervical enlargement?
Accommodates neurons needed to move arms
What is the role of the lumbosacral enlargement?
Accommodates neurons needed to move legs
What neurons are found in the sacral region?
Neurons required for bladder control
What neurons are found in thoracic region?
Autonomic neurons
Where is grey matter found?
The outside of the brain
What does grey matter contain?
Cell bodies of neurons and glia
Where is white matter found?
Inside the brain
What does white matter contain?
Neuronal axons wrapped in myelin
What are the dorsal spinal cord functions?
Sensory info into the spinal cord (Afferent)
What are the ventral spinal cord functions?
Sensory info out of spinal cord (Efferent)
