Intoductiom To Blood Flashcards
What is haematopoiesis?
The generation of blood in the bone marrow
Outline the 5 main types of WBC;
1) lymphocyte
2) monocyte
3) eosinophil
4) basophil
5) neutrophil
Describe innate immunity;
Myeloid cells are derived from the common myeloid progenitor
Very rapid response
Describe adaptive immunity;
Lymphoid cells are derived from the common lymphoid progenitor
What are monocytes?
Bloodborne stage in the development of tissue macrophages
Outline what phagocytosis is;
The ingestion and destruction of foreign and unwanted material - bacteria or effete red blood cells
Preformed by phagocytes
Why does the body maintain the concentration of RBCs in the peripheral blood?
To ensure efficient oxygen transport around the body
What are erythrocytes?
Myeloid cells, derived initially from the common myeloid progenitor during haematopoiesis
Give some characteristics of oxygen transport;
Increases cell surface area
For transport, oxygen is found to haemoglobin
No nucleus
Biconcave shape
What are red cells eliminated by?
Reticuloendothelial system
What is the job of plasma?
A transport medium for moving the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets around the body
What is the job of haemostasis ?
Keeps circulating blood in a fluid state
Once injury occurs, it produces a clot to stop the bleeding, defines the clot to the site of injury and finally dissolves the clot as the wound heals
What is needed for effective haemostasis?
Balance between blood vessels, platelets and plasma proteins
Describe primary haemostasis;
Very rapid
Mediated by cellular components
Short term action to alleviate blood loss
Describe secondary haemostasis;
Rapid
Mediated by plasma components
Longer term control of bleeding
