Into to CT Test 1 Flashcards
What did Allan Cormack do?
Left his computer for the weekend then came back and collected data recorded by the computer. This was the first Scan data.
What did Johann Radon do?
Published a mathematical proof in 1917(at this time had no application)that is now the basis for CT construction.
Wanted to know what the space was in between two pieces
What did Godfrey Hounsfield?
He was backed by EMI and developed the first CT scanner in 1972.
The Father of CT
Which individuals were awarded the Nobel Prize for their contribution in medicine for the CT scanner? And in what year did this contribution occur?
Cormack and Hounsfield in 1979
1st Generation Characteristics
- Pencil beam (one beam/one tube)
- Only could do heads
- Translate rotate scanner
- Could go 180 degrees but only in 1 degree increments
- Very Slow
2nd generation characteristics
- Fan beam
- Moved in increments of 10 degrees could only go 180 degrees all together
- Bow tie filter
- Translate Rotate Scanner
- Was more torso capable
3rd generation characteristics
- Rotate-rotate scanner
- Could go 360 degree around
- X-ray in an arch
- More detectors 250-750
- Scanned faster
- Tube and detectors rotated in unison
- CONS Left a ring artifact and the cord would get wound up
4th generation characteristics
- Rotate-only scanner
- Eliminated ring artifact
- Stationary Detectors all around the gantry
- PT motion caused major issues
Explain what an Electron Beam CT (EBCT) is:
AKA as ultrafast CT. It differs from conventional CT because it uses a large electron gun as its x-ray source. A massive anode is placed in a semicircular ring around the patient. Neither the x-ray beam source or the detectors move. Used for cardiac imaging 5th generation
Explain what a Dual Energy Sources CT Scanner is.
It has 2 detectors and 2 tubes. It is used for heart imaging. It was introduced by Siemens manufacture.
List five CT advancements in Diagnostic Imaging.
1. Multi Row Detector Scanners
2. Dual Source CT scanner
3. Volume Scanning- CT fluoroscopy, CT angiography, 3D imaging, virtual reality imaging
4. Radiation Therapy- could be used in treatment planning with the stimulation process
5. Nuclear medicine- the CT scanner can be combined with a PET scanner. “SPECT”
ETC—Mobile Scanning, air port security, paleontology, livestock, logging, art
Slip Ring technology allowed what type of scanning mode possible?
Helical scan modes
obtain continuous electrical power source and continual information gained
State the importance of increasing the number of detectors for computed tomography images.
It improves the diagnostic quality of CT images and reduces the time for helical studies. Also, more detectors allows more information to be obtained. More detectors, more rows= more information
Describe the purpose of the “bow tie” filter used in computed tomography.
To reduce the beam intensity at the periphery of the beam corresponding to the thinner areas of patient’s anatomy. Also increases the image quality
Identify the names CT is commonly referred to by medical personnel.
CAT scan, Computer Assisted Tomography. Previously known as Computerized Axial tomography, Computerized Tomography
