structured interviews
these are made up of a pre-determined set of questions that are asked in a fixed order, like a questionnaire but conducted face to face or over the phone
unstructured interview
these work a lot like a conversation, there are no set questions
there is a general aim that a certain topic will be discussed but interaction tends to be free-flowing
semi-structures interviews
there is a list of questions determined in advance but interviewers are also free to ask follow up questions when they feel it is appropriate
structured interview strength
easy to replicate due to their standardised format, this also reduces differences between interviewers
structured interview limitation
it is not possible for interviewers to deviate from the topic or elaborate their points, this could be a source of frustration for some
unstructured interview strength
there is much more flexibility and interviews are more likely to gain insight into the worldview of the interviewee
unstructured interview limitation
analysis of data is not straightforward, the interview may consist of a lot of irrelevant information, drawing conclusions is also difficult
response bias
this is where respondents tend to reply in a similar way
social desirability bias
respondents may be keep to present themselves in a positive light and this may influence the honesty of the answers given
