interventions Flashcards
what are the 2 types of biological intervention?
medication - antidepressants, anti psychotics, mood stabilizers : biologically change the level or movement of neurotransmitters.
non medical - electroconvulsive therapy: electrodes attached to the scalp, currents passed causing a seizure.
what are newer approaches in biological intervention?
transcranial magnetic stimulation: magnetic field that the magnet produces can change the brain function.
transcranial direct current stimulation: under the cathodal electrode the brain becomes less excitable. treatment is still in its early stages.
what is evaluation f biological intervention?
medication: associated with large side effects, adherence is not always good.
lots of trail and error
non medical : lots of evidence to suggest it is effective, side effects
what are the 3 psychological interventions ? and evaluation
psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapy goal: making aware of unconscious conflict, free association, dream analysis, three - seven years of therapy ( - lack of support)
behaviour therapy: flooding, systematic desensitization, participant modelling, aversive therapy, extinction, token economy. (good empirical evidence, ignores cognitions and emotions)
CBT: challenging thoughts, replacing them, irrational or real, can they do anything about it? (helps to monitor and manage thoughts, potential for dependance on the therapist)
what are some social interventions? some evaluation?
family therapy: understand the families social system, examine relationships, educate, improve communication, and resolve any conflicts. (has been successful in a range of disorders)
service user led intervention: the patients view and explanations are valuable in understanding what they are going through. (likely will need medication in order to be effective).
