What is aid?
assistance given from one country to another including money, equipment, training and loans
What are the types of aid?
Long term aid
short term aid
government aid
charity aid (non governmental)
bilateral aid (tied aid)
multilateral aid
debt abolition
Long term aid
tries to solve a problem so it will never happen again eg construction of hospitals to reduce mortality rates or dam constructions for regular water supply
Short term aid
tries to solve an immediate problem eg shortages of home following an earthquake (sometimes called emerging aid or crisis aid)
Government aid
money pledged by a country and raised from its tax system
Charity aid (non governmental)
Funded by voluntary contributions from the public eg shelter, oxfam and comic relief
Bilateral aid (tied aid)
the country receiving the aid must spend the money on goods and services from the country providing it
Multilateral aid
aid package put together by a group of countries perhaps to respond to a natural disaster
Debt abolition
when a richer country cancels the debt owed to them by poorer countries
