Enjineering (coastlines) Flashcards
What are the two types of engineering?
Hard and soft
What is hard engineering?
the building of permanent concrete defences to control the flood of water
What is soft engineering?
a more natural way to manage floodwater. often creating space for flood water in the landscape
What are examples of hard engineering?
Sea walls
Rick armour
Gabiones
What are examples of soft engineering?
Beach nourishment
Reprofiling
Dune nourishment
Sea walls
concrete walls that are placed at the foot of a cliff to prevent erosion. They are curved to reflect the energy back into the sea
people can walk along them
expensive
Rock armour
large boulders placed at the foot of a cliff. they break the waves and absorb their energy
can be used for fishing
rocks expensive to transfer
Gabiones
rocks are held in mesh cages and placed in areas of erosion
cheap
looks unnatural
Beach nourishment
sand is pumped onto an existing beach to build it up
blends in with other beaches
sand has to be brought from elsewhere
Reprofiling
sediment is redistributed from the lower part of the beach to the upper part of the beach
cheap and simple
needs to be continuously
Dune nourishment
grass planted on sand dunes stabilises the dunes and helps to trap sand to build them up
cheap
areas have to be zoned off from public
