Coastlines Flashcards
When do emergent coastlines occur?
when either water level has fallen or the land has risen either way there is now a bit of coastline that is no longer under water
How do tectonic plates relate to emergent coastlines?
emergent coastlines can pop up after tectonic activity where land is being pushed up by the tectonic plates
What features to emergent coastlines have?
rocky coastlines
wave cut platforms
raised beaches
When do submergent coastlines occur?
when coastlines are submerged under water due to rising sea levels could be as a result of an increase in water volume or the sinking of the lands surface
When do discordant coastlines occur?
when bands of different types of rocks run perpendicular (at 90•) to the coast
these bands of rocks alternate between soft and hard rock all eroding at different rates
What features to discordant coastlines have?
headlands due to eroding hard rock
bays due to eroding soft rock
What are concordant coastlines?
have bands of similar rock types running parallel (alongside) the coast
What features do concordant coastlines have?
coves formed by waves breaking through an outer layer of hard rock and then the waves sweep away the soft rock further inland creating a cove
