Global inequality Flashcards
What is global inequality?
the unequal distribution of reasources, opportunities and power that shape well-being
Why countries don’t develop at the same rate
-Physical environment
-history colonialism
-political factors
-economic factors
-social investment
Physical environment
access to the sea is important so mountainous countries have developed slower as trade is harder
climate is an influence, tropical countries have developed slower as they experience more natural disasters like flooding drought and earthquakes
History colonialism
some countries colonialised others and their colonial powers used the reasources and people of their colonies to grow their economies
Political factors
countries are at war or have a corrupt government so money does not reach people who need it most
Economic factors
some countries have high levels of debt so all the country’s money is going to repayments so there is very little left over for development projects
Social investment
Countries that have prioritised investment in education and healthcare have generally developed at a faster rate than countries that have not
What are the consequences of uneven development?
-Health - many ppl in LIC can’t access clean water and sanitation this can lead to disease and lower life expectancies. vice versa for HIC
-wealth - estimated that the richest 10% of the population receives 52% of global income and the poorest 50% recives 8% of global income
-migration - push and pull factors, some ppl move to find better employment and others to flee dangerous situations
