Internal Body Systems (General) Flashcards
Levels of Biological Organisation
Tissues, organs, and organ systems
Functions multicellular organism need to complete
Obtain nutrients and gases
Remove wastes
Food and waste moved in and out at the right time
Respond to internal and external stimuli, maintain homeostasis
Tissues
A collection of similar types of cells that perform a function.
Main Types: epithelial, connective, nerve, muscle
Organ
A structure composed of different tissues working together to perform a complex bodily function (i.g. heart - muscle, connective, nervous)
Organ System
One or more organs and structures that work together to perform a major bodily function (e.g. circulation)
Anatomy
The study of the body structures of plants and animals.
Studied through dissection and the separation of the parts of body structures
Physiology
The study of the functions and activities of organisms, especially the physical and chemical processes that support life
