Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Cellular Respiration
Important metabolic pathway that extracts energy (ATP) from nutrient molecules (i.e. glucose) with the use of Oxygen (O2)
Type of reaction of cellular respiration
Exothermic (exogonic) - releases energy
Catabolic pathway
Catabolic Pathway
Phase of metabolism where a large, complex, energy-rich molecule is broken down into smaller, energy-poor inorganic molecules
Glucose
Comes from nutrients (carbohydrates) via digestion
Energy-rich molecules that is oxidized to produce ATP
Oxygen
Comes from atmosphere. Is inhaled and transported via respiratory structures
Final electron acceptor. All O2 gets reduced to produce water
Carbon Dioxide
Produced by decarboxylation reaction of glucose
Exhaled via respiratory structures (player in photosynthesis)
Water
Produced by oxygen reduction
Exhaled via respiratory structures (player in photosynthesis)
