intelligence Flashcards
Cognitive process theories
approaches to intelligence that analyze the mental processes that underlie intelligent thinking
Triarchic theory of intelligence
The theory of intelligence that distinguishes between analytical, practical, and creative forms of mental ability
Metacomponents
Higher-order processes used to plan and regulate task performance
Performance components
The actual mental processes used to perform a task
Knowledge-acquisition components
The processes that allow us to learn from our experience, store information in memory, and combine new insight with previously acquired information
3 forms of intelligence
- Analytical
- Practical
- Creative
Analytical intelligence
The kinds of academically oriented problem-solving skills measured by traditional intelligence tests
Analytical intelligence
The kinds of academically oriented problem-solving skills measured by traditional intelligence tests
Practical intelligence
The skills needed to cope with everyday demands and to manage oneself and other people effectively.
Creative intelligence
The mental skills needed to deal adaptively with novel problems
Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
-intelligence should also include abilities and capacities outside of the intellectual sphere
-Everyone has their own abilities
WAIS vs WISC
-WAIS Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale
-WISC Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale for Children (children are compared to their own age group)
Standardization
development of norms (based on performance of large samples)
Flynn effect
the observed increase in average (raw) IQ scores over time
Static testing vs Dynamic testing
Static testing: A traditional approach to testing where detailed instructions must be closely adhered to in order to make sure that all testees are responding to as similar a situation as possible so that their scores will be solely a reflection of their ability
Dynamic testing: The standard testing is followed up with an interaction in which the examiner gives the respondent guided feedback on how to improve performance and observes how the person utilizes the information
