Inorganic Substances Flashcards
What are inorganic substances
substances that do not contain carbon ( except for carbonate and CO2)
( do not burn due to no carbon )
name 2 types of inorganic substances
water
mineral salts
why is water important
- required for photosynthesis (needed with CO2 to make glucose and O2)
- animals - plays a big role in nutrition
- animals / humans - medium of transport of nutrients like O2 , CO2 , metallic waste , digestion , excretion
- plants and animals - water provides a fluid medium for chemical reactions
why re minerals needed
hey are needed in both plants and animals for maintenance of cell function , growth and development
how to plants take up the minerals
they take up the minerals fro the soil
what re fertilises used for
to enrich the should with minerals like nitrate and phosphate so that plants can take the minerals form the soil
what happens of plants are grown regularly and harvested regularly
the Soil becomes depleted in minerals
how can you replace the minerals in the soil
One way to replace the minerals in the soil is to allow dead plants to be ploughed back into the soil
Decomposition of the dead plants will result in the release of minerals back into the soil.
You can also use fertilizes
explain what eutrophication is
excess fertilisers run off into the lakes , rivers and dams
this causes the an algae bloom to occur in dams
algae bloom causes the the increase of algae and plant growth on the surface of the water
due to the plants and algae covering the surface of the water it blocked sunlight to plants growing on the lower levels under the water
this causes the plants on the lower levels to die and decompose
fish that feed on the plants in the lower levels will not have food and as a result they die and decompose
this causes a decrease in the water quality
what’s is food security
when all people
at all times
haves excess to nutritious food
