Innervation Flashcards
Somatic nervous system is made up of
Motor to skeletal muscle
Sensory from skin
Sensory from muscles, joints, and tendons
Visceral sensory system takes care of
Sensory from visceral organs (ex: ischemia, stretch)
Autonomic nervous system is comprised of
Parasympathetic and Sympathetic motor pathways which innervate cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands
Parasympathetic innervation takes care of what
Rest and digest, motor innervation
Sympathetic innervation takes care of what
Fight or flight;
Motor to thoracic organs
Motor to abdominal organs
Motor to body wall
What does each branch off the vertebra carry
Ventral root: motor only
Dorsal root: sensory only
Spinal nerve: motor and sensory
Dorsal/ventral rami: motor and sensory
Sympathetic targets are in
Body wall- blood vessels, arrector pili muscles, sweat glands
Body cavities- heart, lungs, abdomen, and pelvis
Sympathetic preganglionic cell bodies are in
Lateral horn of thoracolumbar vertebrae (T1-L3)
Parasympathetic targets are in
Body cavities- organ walls
Head
External genitalia
Parasympathetic preganglionic cell bodies are located in
Lateral horn of craniosacral vertebrae
What are Intercostal nerves
Extensions of ventral rami of T1-T11
What kind of fibers do intercostal nerves carry
Somatic motor to intercostal muscles
Somatic sensory to thoracic wall skin, joints, muscles, and tendons
Sympathetic motor to sweat glands, Arrector pilli, and blood vessels in the skin
What fibers innervate the lungs
The vagus nerve provides parasympathetic to the walls of lungs (bronchoconstriction of smooth muscle) of bronchial tree) Sympathetic innervation is provided by pulmonary nerves (bronchodilation of smooth muscle of bronchial tree)
What innervates the diaphragm
Phrenic nerve provides somatic sensory and somatic motor.
Intercostal nerves provide peripheral somatic sensory
What does the phrenic nerve innervate in the thoracic cavity
Diaphragm- somatic motor and sensory
Parietal pleura- somatic sensory
Fibrous pericardium- somatic sensory
Parietal layer of serous pericardium- somatic sensory
