Injury Prevention Flashcards
5 types of injury prevention
- SCREENING
- Taping + bracing
- Warm up
- Flexibility training
- Protective equipment
What do screenings do
Identify risks in a performer eg;
-strength of muscles
-muscle imbalances
-flexibility
-cardiac functioning
If potential weaknesses are found training programmes can be implemented to reduce this risk
-strength and conditioning
Disadvantage of screening
May leed to anxiety if a performer finds out the are susceptible to injury
Physiological effects of a warm up (injury related)
- increased flexibility
- increased muscle temperature
- increased muscle elasticity so reduced chance of injury
What is taping
Involves taping a weak joint to add support and stability
What is bracing
More substantial form of taping involving a hinged brace usually on the knee or ankle
Extra factors to consider to prevent injury
Diet / fluid intake
Strength and conditioning
Correct application of SPORR
Train:rest ratio
Ice baths
Cryotherapy
Sports massage
Hyperbaric chamber
Types of stretching
Static - hold for 30 secs
Ballistic - mimics sporting movement
