Concussion
Caused by mild head injury.
Common in: rugby (clashing of heads), cycling (falling and hitting your head on the ground).
Symptoms: dizziness, confusion, unconsciousness.
Treatment: seek medical advice and monitor.
Simple or closed fracture
When bone breaks but doesn’t break skin.
Compound or open fracture
Bone breaks and causes skin to break.
Can lead to blood loss and infection.
Greenstick fractures
Common in younger children.
When bone bends and breaks on the other side.
Stress fractures
Mainly due to overuse.
Small cracks form in the bone.
Dislocation
When one of bones at joint comes out of place.
Occurs due to a blow to area.
Example: Falling and putting your arm out to save yourself can cause shoulder dislocation.
Symptoms: pain, misshapen joint swelling.
Treatment: RICE and seek medical help.
Sprain
An injury at joint where some of fibers of ligament are torn.
Happens when joint goes through greater range of movement than normal.
Symptoms: Pain, bruising, swelling.
Treatment: RICE
Torn cartilage
Cartilage acts as cushion at end of bones.To Tera it is really common in sports injury.
Happens through powerful twisting or sudden impact.
Symptoms: pain, swelling and stiffness at joint.
Treatment: rest and strengthening exercises.
Strain
Stretch or tear in the muscle fibers.
Happens when muscles are overstretched.
Symptoms: pain, bruising and swelling.
Treatment: RICE.
Tennis elbow
Where tendons of elbow are inflamed.Pain felt outside of elbow.
Caused by poor technique or overuse.
Treatment: rest and recovery, RICE.
Golfers elbow
Where tendons of elbow are inflamed.Pain is felt in the inside of elbow.
Cause by poor technique or overuse.
Treatment: rest, recovery and RICE.
RICE
R- rest, do not use affected area to allow time to heal.
I- ice, cold ice helps reduce the swelling.
C-compression, apply bandage to affected area providing support and reducing swelling.
E-elevation, keep affected area raised to help reduce swelling.
Avoid injuries
- Complete a PAR-Q.(personally activity readiness questionnaire).
- Check equipment.
- Warm up before activity.
- Apply principles if training (avoids overuse)
- Play rules of activity
- Wear protective clothing
