Inspection
A
Get patient to stand up- are they well, discomfort, body habitus/ distension, vomit bowls etc.
Locally- any lumps and get them to cough (say you would look at scrotum)

Palpation
A
Say you would palpate scrotum
Palpate the lump/ inguinal area laterally. Put one hand on back and the other on the region.
Compress area firmly and get the patient to cough

Percuss and auscultation
A
This may show if bowel is in the hernia
