Influenza Flashcards
what type of virus is the influenza virus?
RNA virus
what are the 2 surface proteins of the influenza virus?
haemagglutinin,
neuraminidase
what is haemagglutinin’s function?
facilitates viral attachment and entry to the host cell
what is neuraminidase’s function?
enables new viron to be released from the host cell
what is worse antigenic shift or drift?
shift as there is major change in the virus allowinf it to jump between species.
what are the requirements for a pandemic?
human pathogenicity,
antigenic shift,
efficient person-person transmission
clinical features of influenza?
fever, cough, sore throat, myalgia, headache, malaise, n/v, diarrhoea
risk factors for complicated influenza?
chronic disease, DM, severe immunosuppresion, >65, pregnant, <6months, morbid obesity
common complications of influenza
acute bronchitis,
secondary bacterial pneumonia
less common complications of influenza
primary viral pneumonia, resp failure, myocarditis, Guillain-Barre, myositis and myoglobinuria
what is encephalitis lethargica?
"sleepy disease", post influenza A, fever, headache, lethargy, sleep reversal, external opthalmoplegia
investigations for influenza?
viral nose and throat swabs, CXR, blood culture, pulse oximetry, RR, U&Es, FBC, CRP
Red flag for secondary to influenza bacterial pneumonia?
flu symptoms and a fever for >4 days
neuraminidase inhibitors used for influenza?
oseltamivir,
zanamivir
antivirals used in influenza?
peramivir,
favipiravir,
baloxavir marboxi
