Influenza Flashcards
1
Q
Describe respiratory viruses
A
- acute infections
- major contributor to childhood death
- 1 clinical manifestation can be caused by many viruses & one virus can cause several different clinical manifestations
2
Q
Describe the Influenza virus
A
- family Orhtomyxoviridae
- three antigenically distinct species - A,B,C
- Febrile illness, sore throat, coryza, muscle pains, headache & fatigue
- complications - viral/bacterial pneumonia
3
Q
What are some reasons for enhanced pathogenicity ?
A
- location of receptors
- RNA pol efficiency
- lack of immunity
- HA0 cleavage site
4
Q
Describe cleavage of HA & pathogenicity
A
- progeny influenza viruses are spiked with HA0
- HA0 must be cleaved into HA1 & HA2 by host cellular proteases
- human influenza HA0 is cleaved by tryptase Clara found in certain cells
5
Q
What does HPAI stand for ?
A
high pathogenicity avian influenza
6
Q
What does LPAI stand for ?
A
low pathogenicity again influenza
