B- Us constitution states that the USA have the same rights as a democratic country.
A- Freedom of speech, protest, join an interest group and run as candidate
L- This essay will discuss how these rights have influenced government decisions making to moderate extent
Freedom of speach
E- Us citizens are able to say what ever they want within reason (no racism, hate speech ,etc) without punishment
Ex- Obama said “I accept that people are going to call me awful things everyday, and i will always defend their right to do so.” this is following the major backlash Obama faced from being a left wing supporter.
A- Illustrates how when politicians are disagreed with the USA recognises right, countreis like north korea would not, punishment.
H- Right is constricted
Ex- June 2013, Edward Snowden leaked highly classified US survalence programmes. Edward was banned from USA and told if he came back he would face life in prison.
A- Government are selective in what they class as freedom of speech
C- Limeted extent, Although people can say what they want if it damaged the governments reputation they will get punished.
Protest
E- Protest to raise awarness on a particular issue to society and the governmet, as long as peaceful
Ex- Summer 2020 BLM protests dominated streets of US against racism and police brutality
A- People in USA raised awareness on racial motivated crimes in the US through protesting
H- Protests got violent
Ex- BLM protests got violent and at least 200 cities in the US has to impose curfew by early june 2020
A- Violent protests do result in violence, police must get involved to protect citazens
C- Great extent, Peaceful protest are premitted and do influence gov descions
Interest group
E- Join interest group when they feel strongly on a particular issue
EX- 5.5 million Us members in the NRA
A- Emphasizes how many people are interested in nras message and could influence gov desicions
H- People argue that interest groups interfere with democracy as they seek benifits for a minotity of people rather than majority
Ex- HCi (handgun control inc) argue that handguns should be banned
A- Gov descions cant please both groups making iti undemocratic
C- Limited extent. Siding with one group unfair and undemocratic
Stand as candidate
E- Citazens can run at local, state and federal kevel.
Ex- in 2003 Arnold schwarznegger stood to become californias govener and won
A- proves anyone can run as cadidate and become involved in making political decisions
H- Argue you need money to run
EX- Donald trump spent 66 million of his own money in his electorial campaign.
A- It isnt as easy as just becoming president, you need to be a millionare or be well known
C- Moderate extent, although you can run at local state you need to be financially well off to run at higher levels and actually make an impact
Conclusion
Moderate extent. Government needs to support candidates financially for them to have a chance in making a difference, needs to value all pressure groups values and evaluate freedom of speech right.
