Smoking
P- Smoking
E- Smoking is an addiction that has been linked to many life threatening diseases such as lung cancer and heart diseases.
EX- Evidence from ASH Scotland 2018 reported that 1/5th of all deaths in scotland are smoke related
A- Shows that smoking is a significant killer of Scots, and those who smoke are more likely to suffer from poor health
H- Those who live in more deprived areas are more likely to smoke
E- People living in poverty might use smoking as a stress relevier when dealing with the ocst f living crisis or to supress hunger
EX- Ash scotland, 2018 which showed that 27% of the poorest 5th in Scotland smoke compared to 9% of the 5th rich
A- Suggests that whilst smoking is a choice its more likely found people in social classes D and E on lower income
C- Smoking contributes to health inequalities to a great extent. Smoking is a big issue in Scotland especially in poorer areas and is killing many
Alcohol
P- Excessive drinking of alcohol
E- The more you drink the more likely you are to face long term health issues such as liver disease
EX- Every 15 minutes someone in Scotland is hospitalised with an alcohol related illness.
A- This proves that many Scots are facing health issues due to alcohol related issues
H- There is a clear link between alcohol deaths and deprivation
E- More deprived areas have easier ways of accessing alcohol
EX- In deprived areas there are 40% more alcohol outlets than in any other areas
A- Proves that having alcohol easily avalible can lead to a better chance of excessive drinking resulting in poor health
C- Excessive alcohol drinking contributes to health inequalities to a great extent. Alcohol shouldnt be as easily accessed in more deprived areas
Toxic masculinity
P- toxic masculinity
E- Many men act tough to hide their emotions and refuse to see the GP about any emotional or physical issues
EX- BBC news report in 2018 claims that 75% of suicides where commited by men
H- This mindset is seen more in men who live in poverty
E- Traditional male stereotypes are seen more in deprived areas
EX- NHS scotland in 2019 which showed that the male suicide rate was 3x higher for the most deprived areas in scotland
A- Proves that males in poverty feel more pressured to fit into gender stereotypes and act “tough”
C- Toxic masculinity contributes to health inequalities to a moderate extent. More work should be done to ensure men are comfortable contacting their GP

P- Gender
E- Women are more likely to report an illness than men
EX- BMS, women are more likely to get checkups for breast and cervical cancer than men are for testicular/bowel cancer.
A- This shows that women are more comfortable seeing their GPs and getting checkups than men
H- Poverty influences this
E- Women in deprived areas are less likely to consult there gp if they have an issue
EX- NHS scotland 2019, poorer women have 6% less chance of surviving breast cancer than better off women
A- Poorer women are more likely to attend the GP when there disease is at a later stage and harder to treat
C- Gender has contributed to health inequlities to a moderate extent.
