Individual Difference Variables
Include elements that cannot be changed (age), and others that are more easily changeable (self-concept, self-regulation, knowledge etc.) and some stable things such as personality.
Self-Concept and Self-Awareness
Self-concept relates to your view of yourself.
Self-awareness is a process of viewing yourself in a way that increases the accuracy of your self-concept.
The Johari Window
Describes the various components of your ‘self’ that contribute to you conscious and unconscious awareness.
Describes all you know about yourself and all others know about you.
Self- Esteem
Values, beliefs and attitudes are reflected in the ‘self’ part of the term. The ‘esteem’ component comes from the worth or weighting you ascribe to each these parts of yourself.
The Influence of Family
The earliest developmental influence on how you perceive yourself and how you communicate with others is your family. Messages spouted by family are internalised and you begin to hold the same perceptions as your family.
