Perception
Perception is how we organise and interpret information in our environment determined by how we communicate about the information and the environment.
Self-Awareness
Your ability to recognise your qualities, an understanding of who we are.
Self-Esteem and Communication
Self esteem can influence the mode of communication, e.g., those with low self esteem tend to use modes of communication that are not face-to-face.
Anxious Attachment
Low opinion of themselves and high opinion of others. Tend to care less about who they disclose themselves to.
Avoidant Attachment
High perspective of themselves and low perspective of others. Importance they place on relationships may be less significant than those with anxious attachment. Tend to avoid self-disclosure.
Secure Attachment
Greater ease with self-disclosure
Insecure Attachment and Communication
Relates to higher levels of:
- Partner withdrawal
- Aggression
- Nagging
- Avoidance
- Criticism
- Rejection
- Low self-disclosure
Emotion and Communication
Emotion affects communication and influences how we talk to others and how others hear what we say.
Emotional Intelligence
The competence we have in expressing emotion and in listening and responding to the emotional communication of others.
Self-Regulation
The capacity to monitor your own behaviour, identify of any changes are necessary to reach your goals, and set about making those changes.
Useful for behaviour change programs (smoking cessation etc.)
If a conversation isn’t going well, those with high self-regulation can review the situation, identify their communication goal and modify their communication behaviour to achieve this goal, thus making more effective communication.
