Clinical Communication
A transfer of information between a source and a receiver.
May be verbal, non-verbal, spoken, personal etc.
Typically dyadic (involves 2 people).
Health Communication
The symbolic processes by which people, individually and collectively, understand, shape and accommodate health and illness.

Understanding the problem from their perspective and allowing them to narrate their own story.

Patient-Centred Communication
Patient-centred communication involves an empathetic understanding of someone else’s perspective. Less about knowledge and more about interpersonal style and there is a focus on ‘how’ you say things.
Principles of Communication
Emotional aspects: - Be aware of feeling (own and others) - Be aware of how you are expressing your own emotions and opinions. Eliciting and Clarifying Information: - Questioning - Paraphrasing Be clear: - Make sure providing listener by providing clear information. - Adapt language to the audience. - Use concrete examples. Take turns: - Look for cues - Avoid interrupting Non-verbals - Be conscious of non-verbal behaviour - Use appropriate eye contact - Eliminate distractions Assertiveness: - Communicate your personal rights, while respecting the rights of others.
