Inflammation and Immunological Skin Conditions Flashcards
what are the two types of eczema
atopic and contact
what is contact eczema
contact with allergens
what is atopic eczema
usually starts in childhood associated with hayfever and asthma
what is seborrhoeic eczema
eczema of eyelashes and scalp
what are triggers for eczema
stress, menstruation, illness, changes in weather
what is the management for eczema
cotton clothing, emollients, soap substitutes and topical corticosteroids
what is occupational (contact) dermatitis
reaction to an environmental agent - difficult to identify the source but once removed should resolve
what is psoriasis
inflammatory skin disease associated with dysregulated epidermal proliferation - rapid turnover of cells before old ones are removed
what is topical treatment of psoriasis
emollients and topical steroids and PUVA
what is systemic treatment of psoriasis
medicines that stop high cell turnover (methotrexate and infliximab)
what are immunological skin conditions
auto-antibody attack on skin that causes loss of cell-cell adhesions which causes the skin to split and form vesicles filled with inflammatory exudate
what is pemphigoid
clear/ blood filled vesicles form on the skin and mucous membranes
how is pemphigoid managed
immunosuppressants and steroids
what is pemphigus
affects the mucosa and skin, rarely see intact bullae, intra-epithelial blisters and can be fatal
what is epidermolysis bullosa
group of conditions ranging from mild to ones that are incompatible with life (death in utero or shortly after birth)
