Inflammation Flashcards
Functions of inflammation
Reduces spread of and destroys pathogens like bacteria, fungi, etc.
Removes damaged tissues and cells from site.
Begins repairing damaged area.
Signs of immflamation
Redness
Swelling
Heat
Pain
Stages of inflammation
1) When damage occurs mast cells are release chemicals to coordinate inflammation.
2) Histamine increases blood flow to area – causing heat and redness (Also causes capillary walls to be more permeable. More plasma enters area causing swelling)
3) Heparin prevents clotting in immediate area.
4) Other chemicals attract phagocytes –leucocytes that destroy invaders by phagocytosis.
5) Abnormal conditions stimulate pain receptors – making it painful.
6) Phagocytes die and mix with plasma to form pus
7) Mitosis occurs to make new cells and repair area.
