Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block Flashcards
what does an IANB give anaesthesia to?
mandibular teeth on one side (via IAN), lower lip and chin on one side (mental nerve), part of the tongue and lingual gingival tissue on one side (lingual nerve)
what is the buccal gingivae anaesthetised by?
long buccal / buccal infiltration
where does the non-dominant thumb go when injecting
coronoid notch
where is the non-dominant index or middle finger placed when injecting
extra-orally at the posterior border of the ramus
where does the needle advance from?
the premolar region of the opposite side with syringe parallel to mandibular occlusal plane
where is the needle inserted
through mucosa in mandibular retro-molar region lateral to pterygomandibular raphe
how far from the occlusal plane is the needle inserted
about 6-10mm from mandibular occlusal plane
what are the oral landmarks for IDB
coronoid notch of mandibular ramus, posterior border of mandible, pterygomandibular raphe, lower premolar of opposite side
how deep do you advance the needle
until the medial border of the mandible is reached
what do you do once you touch the bone
the needle is withdrawn slightly until it is supra-periosteal, then aspirate and deposit 1.5ml of solution
how is the lingual nerve blocked?
by withdrawing the needle about 10mm (1cm), aspirating again and deposit remaining solution
