4-8 weeks in uterus
when does the palate start to develop?
approximately 6-10 weeks in uterus (soft palate can take up to 12)
what is the earliest bone laid down in the skull and when is it laid?
mandible 6/7 weeks
what stems from the first pharyngeal arch?
trigeminal nerve, muscles of mastication, malleus, incus, meckels cartilage
what are the 5 prominences?
frontonasal, medial nasal and lateral nasal, maxillary and mandibular
what does the frontonasal prominence form?
forehead and bridge of nose
what does the medial nasal prominence form?
midline nose, philtrum upper lip, primary palate
what does the lateral nasal prominence form?
alae of nose
what does the maxillary prominence form?
cheeks, lateral upper lip, secondary palate
what does the mandibular prominence form?
lower lip and jaw
how and when do the nasal and oral cavities separate?
separated during 7th and 8th week by palatal shelves. Palatal shelves grow downwards and then rotate up towards the midline to a horizontal position where they fuse together to form a secondary palate. Secondary palate fuses with the primary palate at the incisive foramen and bone is then laid down

females
