DRS ABC
what is the first check in BLS
DANGER - check area for danger
what is the second check in BLS
RESPONSE - shake patients shoulders and ask if they are okay
what is the third step in BLS
SHOUT - shout for help to phone 999, get an AED
what is the fourth step in BLS
AIRWAY - remove foreign bodies from airway, head tilt/jaw thrust (spinal damage), remove loose dentures
what is the fifth step in BLS
BREATHING - check persons breathing by looking at chest (beware of agonal breathing)
what is the sixth step in BLS
CIRCULATION - feel for carotid pulse
how deep are the chest compressions?
5-6cm
what rate do the chest compressions go at?
100-120 per minute
what is the ratio of compressions to ventilation?
30 compression to 2 ventilations
how do you ventilate the patient
bag valve mask over nose and mouth (secure with palm of hand) , light squeeze of bag and refill (x2)
how do you use the AED
place pads in instructed positions and follow instructions
what are the 3 components of CPR?
chest compressions, ventilation and AED
