Inferential Statistics Flashcards
What are inferential statistics?
a set of techniques that uses the laws of chance and probability to help researchers make decisions about what their data mean and what inferences they can make about some population from that information.
What is a null hypothesis?
When you assume that nothing is going on
What are the steps for drawing a conclusion in inferential statistics?
1) assume there is no effect
2) collect data
3) calculate the probability of getting such data, or even more extreme data, if thenull hypothesis is true
4) decide whether to reject or retain the null hypothesis
What is the alpha level?
the point at which researchers will decide whether the ‘p’ is too high (and therefore will retain the null hypothesis) or very low (and therefore will reject the null) (usually set at 0,5)
what is a type I error?
“a false positive” conclude that there is a result when there isn’t
What is a type II error?
” a false negative” we conclude that there are no results when there actually are
What is a t-test?
Allows researchers to test whether two groups means are significantly different.
What is an F test (A.K.A Anova)?
When a study compares two or more groups to each other.
