Infection Control Flashcards
What drugs target c.difficle?
1) Metronidazole
2) Oral vancomycin
3) Fidaxomicin
E. coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Proteus, Salmonella, Serratia, and Citrobacter are part of what family?
Enterobacteriaceae
Some of which can produce carbapenemases
What are some types of carbapenemases?
KPC
OXA-48
NDM
VIM enzymes
Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia are non-fermentors that can produce what?
Carbapenemases
They are carbapenemase producing organisms (CPOs)
What does CPE stand for?
Carbapenemase Producing Enterobacteriaceae
What is Acinetobacter baumannii?
Gram negative bacillus that is muti-drug resistant
Where is Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the environment?
Soil, water & moist environments
What is red man syndrome?
An anaphlylactoid reaction caused by the rapid infusion of the glycopeptide antibiotic Vancomycin.
What is MEWS?
Modified Early Warning Score
Identify patients in need of hospital admission, and those at increased risk of in-hospital death
- Systolic blood pressure: =/< 100 mm Hg
- Pulse rate: =/> 130 beats/minute
- Respiratory rate: =/> 30 breaths/minute
- Temperature: =/> 38.5 C
- Impaired level of consciousness
What does SIRS stand for?
Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome
Other than infection, what can cause a WCC to be raised in a MSU sample?
Vaginal discharge
Catheter in place (due to friction)
What is asymptomatic bacteriuria?
Common in the elderly
Infection but asymptomatic
No need to treat unless become symptomatic (except in pregnant women)
What is mucopurulent Cervicitis?
MPC is a STI of the cervix.
It can be caused by many different germs (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea).
If vesicles are present then can be caused by herpes simplex virus.
What pathogen typically causes infection from overwhelming post splenectomy infection (OPSI)?
Streptococcus pneumoniae
What does hyaluronidase do?
Responsible for local destruction of connective tissue and spread of cellulitis
