How can bacteraemia present?
A
Fever, rigors, shock with or without symptoms
related to original focus of infection,
e.g. cough, sputum, and chest pain with pneumonic bacteraemia

How to manage bacteraemic infections?
A
Reverse shock with i.v. fluids
Intravenous highdose antibiotics (broad spectrum if aetiology unknown or pending)
No role for corticosteroids.

What are procalcitonin (PCT) and MR-proADM?
A
Biomarkers that exhibits greater specificity than other proinflammatory markers (eg, cytokines) in identifying patients with sepsis and can be used in the diagnosis of bacterial infections.
