What are plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi forms of?
Malaria
Plasmodium falciparum is most common
What are the symptoms of malaria?
Fever, malaise, muscle pain, headache, diarrhoea.
More severe: neurological features, coma, renal failure.
Most presentations within 2-4 weeks (except p vivax/ovale)
What is dengue?
Mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus.
Symptoms may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash.
What are dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome?
DHF –> bleeding, low levels of blood platelets
DSS –> As above plus dangerously low BP
What is rickettsial infection?
Obligate intracellular gram negative bacteria, usually living within host endothelial cells.
Responsible for typhus, rickettsialpox, African tick bite fever, Rocky Mountain, Spotted Fever, and Queensland tick typhus.
What is histoplasmosis capsulatum?
A type of fungi
Some people develop an acute respiratory illness with fever, chest pain, cough.
Chronic disease can occur in those with pre-existing lung problems or immunosuppressed – may resemble TB.
What is Schistosomiasis?
Also known as snail fever and bilharzia.
A disease caused by parasitic flatworms called schistosomes.
Can effect the urinary, hepatic, and intestinal tract.
What is Strongyloidiasis?
Caused by a nematode, or a roundworm, in the genus Strongyloides.
Can cause eosinophilia.
What is lassa fever?
A type of haemorrhagic fever
Source is usually rats
SARS and MERS are what group of virus?
