What agent causes syphilis?
Treponema pallidum
What do you treat Chlamydia trachomatis with?
Tetracyclines (beta-lactams are not active)
What are the symptoms of UTI’s?
Urethral- Burning/stinging, increased frequency, dysuria
Bladder- Suprapubic “heaviness” and tenderness
Pyelonephritis- Loin pain, rigors, bacteremia, pyrexia, leucocytosis
What is the most common cause of UTI’s?
Escherichia coli
What is diagnostic for a urinary tract infection?
MSY with pyuria and >10 to the 5 cfu/ml
>10 to the 2 cfu/ml in some special situations
What is basic treatment for lower UTIs?
Increased fluid intake and trimethoprim
When is an intravenous pyelogram required?
1st episode in men and children while recurrent episodes in women
