infection and response Flashcards
Name the 4 types of pathogens
protoctists
viruses
fungi
bacteria
What is a toxin?
a poison released by bacteria
How does the body deal with toxins?
anti bodies are released into the blood to bind to the toxins. This restricts their movement until phagocytes come and engulf them.
What is a Phagocyte?
A type of white blood cell in the body that has the ability to engulf and absorb harmful cells or toxins.
What is a lymphocyte?
A type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to target antigens
What are antigens?
a toxin or foreign substance
what pathogens do vaccines protect against?
viruses
bacteria
which pathogen can anti-biotics kill?
bacteria
what is the name of the cell made when lymphocytes bind with tumour cells?
hybridoma
describe the production of monoclonal antibodies
- inject mouse with pathogens
- collect lymphocytes with desired anti bodies
- merge with tumour cells to from hybridomas
- allow hybridomas to rapidly reproduce in petri dish
- collect and purify their antibodies
why do plants require nitrates?
to make proteins
what is meant by a mechanical defence in plants?
structures that reduce the plants chance of being attatcked
