Homeostasis Flashcards
define homeostasis
The regulation of conditions in your body to maintain a stable environment.
What two systems control homeostasis?
The nervous system
The endocrine system (hormones)
How does information travel in the nervous system?
as electrical impulses
What are the specialised cells in nerves called?
neurons
What is the function of nerves?
transmit information to and from the brain/spinal cord
What is the release of hormones called?
secretion
what do receptors do?
detect changes to the internal conditions in the body
what are effectors?
muscles or glands that bring about changes to maintain a stable environment.
what is the function of a neuron?
carry electrical impulses from one part of the body to another
give 2 adaptations of neurons
extended shape (to carry nerve impulses from one part of the body to another)
Fine branches at their tips (to communicate with other neurons)
What are the 3 types of neurons?
sensory
motor
relay
What is a synapse?
the connection between2 nerves.
What does the sensory neuron do?
carry signals from receptors to the nervous system (brain+spinal cord)
What does the motor neuron do?
Carry signals from the CNS (brain+spinal cord) to the effectors
